Kentucky Relay Service

What is KRS?
The Kentucky Relay Service, or KRS, is a 24-hour service that provides the vital link for effective telephone communication between people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind or Speech Disabled, through the use of specialized equipment, to communicate freely with people who use a standard telephone. When you use the Kentucky Relay Service, your calls are facilitated by highly trained operators called Communication Assistants, or CAs. During a relay call, a CA will voice everything typed by the TTY user and type everything said by the telephone user. In this way, the relay allows people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Speech Disabled to have a telephone conversation with anyone, anytime, even if the other person does not have special equipment!

How do I connect to KRS?
There are now several options available to connect to the Kentucky Relay Service.
Dial 7-1-1 from any phone in Kentucky or the appropriate KRS toll-free number below.

Pay Phone Calls Using Relay Service
Local calls placed from a pay telephone through relay are free of charge. People who use a pay telephone to make long distance calls through relay must give the CA a way to bill the call (examples: calling card or collect call). Coins can not be used to pay for a long distance relay call from a pay phone.

Telephone Features for Customers with Special Needs

Caller ID
Caller ID enables customers to know the number from which an incoming call originates before the call is answered. After the first ring, the caller's telephone number appears on a display unit. Display units must be purchased separately. This service works with TTYs.

RingMaster Service
RingMaster service makes it possible to have up to three different telephone numbers for one telephone line. Customers who use text telephones can have one number for TTYs and a second number for voice calls. Each number has a different ringing pattern to indicate which number was dialed. This pattern also creates different flashing patterns on lights which have been hooked up to the line so that TTY users can tell which number is ringing. This service works with almost any TTY or flasher.

Speed Calling
In an emergency, dialing a number quickly can really mean the difference. We offer a service called Speed Calling for a small monthly charge. Speed Calling lets you reach a phone number by dialing one or two digits. It's a network-based service and can be used with all types of telephone equipment, including TTYs. You can program your telephone line so that the numbers for emergency services, or your friends and family, can be reached quickly.

Call Return & Repeat Dialing
Call Return is a simple way to call back the last number that called you, whether or not you answered the phone. For those times when you just can't get to the phone when it rings, or when you return home and want to know the last person that called while you were out, call return will automatically call back the last number. TouchStar Repeat Dialing automatically redials the last number you dialed. If the number is busy, repeat dialing will keep trying until the line is free, then signal you. You can use repeat dialing for more than one busy number at a time. During this time, you may continue to place and receive calls.
